The Silicone Airlocks have a one-way valve and are made of food-safe silicone that does not contain BPAs or phthalates (plasticizers). The valve allows built-up gas from the fermentation process to escape pressure can escape. The one-way nature of the valve keeps your food safe and sound without exposing it to external influences. When using the airlock for the first time, gently press the tip of the airlock together so that it opens.
